HOWELL — Elementary students at Howell Public Schools will have access to brand-new iPads next year.
The HPS Board of Education unanimously approved the purchase of 380 iPads to replace devices currently in use in elementary school technology labs on Monday, June 10. The current iPads are seven years old and no longer have the requisite memory to support instructional curriculum in the science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) areas, according to district administrators.
The purchase amount of $204,820 will be funded by the district’s 2015 Technology Bond.
“Upgrading to new iPads will ensure that our students have access to current, innovative tools that can enhance their learning experiences, foster creativity, and prepare them for the future,” said Howell Schools Assistant Superintendent of Technology and Operations Paul Pominville. “This investment will allow our students to engage with the curriculum and develop critical skills that are vital in today’s world.”
Elementary students increasingly take part in activities like creating videos and programming robots, which makes the use of newer devices with high amounts of memory and other capabilities important, according to HPS Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services Elson Liu.

Teachers are expected to help students rethink the traditional technology classes held within the district and move toward a model where STEAM disciplines are covered.
“These (STEAM) concepts (are used) to solve real-world problems to ensure (students) are future-ready,” Liu said.
