KCK police say files leaked on dark web following recent cyberattack – Information Today Online

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A cyberattack, that ripped the Kansas City, Kansas police and fire networks offline, is still having major effects.

This as FOX4 is learning more about the extent of this attack.

A source that has examined the file names leaked in this dump that these cyber criminals have released says it would appear that majority of the files held by the police and fire departments in KCK have been compromised.

This, one day after police in KCK acknowledged that data leaked by these cyber criminals was indeed theirs.

FOX4 has learned that the leak is more extensive and damaging than originally thought.

“It should be very concerning for anybody – because that’s not something we wanted, not something we asked for and it does cause an undue strain on our resources when we have to confront those issues,” KCK Mayor Tyrone Garner told FOX4.

“This is a known threat actor, Black Suit has a website or a dark net site that they have up, and they list their supposed it victims and their files,” Tanner Shinn, the principal engineer at Alias Cybersecurity said.

The file names contained in this leak sent to FOX4 from a source have information such as open investigation, training info, bank records, personnel files, compliant reviews and more all posted and now live on the dark web.

While the public that has dealt with either department is advised to reach out to said entities, our cyber expert says there is one group above all that should be most concerned.

“I would imagine that the people who should be the most concerned are employees who are directly involved,” Shinn said.

While the fallout from this will no doubt continue for weeks and months to come, the mayor on Wednesday says those in this city are safe.

“Your services haven’t been diminished, police officers are still responding when you call them, our fire and EMS personal are responding when you call them,” Garner said.

FOX4 for legal reasons has not independently been able to access these files, but the location is said to host people with bad intentions. According to our expert the concern level there should be very high.
