FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — It’s not often the mayor shows up to Fort Wayne City Council, but the Summit City’s Chief Executive is looking to change that.

Mayor Sharon Tucker attended Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, remarking to councilmembers that she wants to make it a monthly visit to open up communication about projects the mayor backs – and on Tuesday, that meant backing upgrades to the city’s website.

“I was here tonight as a commitment to the council that I want to stay engaged and stay involved,” Tucker said.

Or more accurately, the city’s websites. The City of Fort Wayne is looking to invest money into its main website while continuing to support Engage Fort Wayne.

“The two items we brought tonight, the city’s websites were very important for me to sit in and witness,” Tucker said. “Primarily because our websites are adding things that we said we would do as a city, engagement and connection to all of our community.”

Engage Fort Wayne aims to put a robust tool into the hands of Fort Wayne’s residents by telling them what’s happening in their neighborhood.

However, that tool is only as good as the amount of people using it, and Tucker had a clear call to action to residents.

“Please share the website with everyone you know, because we have a jewel, but it does us no good if we don’t share that website,” Tucker said. “Share it on social media, share it with your friends, it’s user friendly, it’s mobile friendly, it’s access friendly and we want to make sure that all of the residents of Fort Wayne get a chance to engage with us.”

According to the city, the website hasn’t seen a major update in ten years, making it long overdue.

“We feel like a new website will enhance and show the world that we are a great up-and-coming city,” said John Felts, Head of Digital Engagement with the City of Fort Wayne.

Upgrading the city website will take about a year — the site has hundreds upon hundreds of pages of ordinances, events and information – but Engage Fort Wayne has only been up for four months, and Dan Baisden, an official with Fort Wayne’s Community Development Division, presented on how it has performed.

“Civic engagement is essential for our city, our neighborhood and our residents,” Baisden said while speaking about Engage Fort Wayne. “We launched back in February … it is Fort Wayne’s digital civic engagement and information platform.”

After the meeting, Tucker also told some councilmembers that she plans to visit council monthly to make sure that communication between the city’s legislative body and her administration remains open.
